Systematic Literature Review: Reporting Standards

A systematic review critically gathers, evaluates, and synthesizes all available research on a specific question through a structured protocol to guide evidence-based conclusions.

Reporting Standards

PRISMA (the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses; link opens in new window) is 'an evidence-based minimum set of items for reporting in systematic reviews and meta-analyses.' The PRISMA checklist is a useful guideline for content that should be reported and included in the final write-up of your systematic review and will also help in the planning stages.

PRISMA-S (link opens in a new window) is the reporting guideline for systematic review search methods.

PRISMA-P (link opens in a new window) is the protocol for reporting guidelines.

ROSES The ROSES flow diagrams are templates for recording the flow of articles through searching, screening, coding/meta-data extraction, data extraction, critical appraisal, and synthesis for systematic reviews and systematic maps. Reviewers can customize them as needed, yet these templates represent the essential details required for any review process schematic.

ROSES-S (link opens in a new window) is the RepOrting standard for Systematic Evidence Syntheses search methods.

ROSES-M  (link opens in a new window) is the protocol for reporting guidelines.

The EQUATOR Network (link opens in a new window) lists reporting standards for multiple study designs. You can search for the right guidelines for your type of study.

If you are undertaking a Cochrane review, please select the correct Cochrane Handbook (link opens in a new window) for your review type.
